December 6th marked the last spinning event for 2015 in Mason’s Mill, PMB. Hosted by Sidewayz, the event played host to drifters from the Supadrift Series such as Paolo Gouveia, Joey Govender, Royce Munnery and others, as well as local spinners such as Kurt Volmink, Bruce Swartley, 15 year old Kyle Amod and many more.
The event started out quietly as the weather wasn’t the greatest on the day but it didn’t take long before the drifters started practicing around the track and that’s when things started warming up! The word got out quickly and before you knew it the banks were full of supporters and the pits had cars everywhere, from the Nissan 200sx to the Mazda RX7 to the legendary ‘boxshape’, the BMW E30. It started off with the drifters doing single runs and showing the crowd what each of them can do, then to heat things up the drifters started doing tandem runs which the crowd went crazy for!
The timed runs followed afterwards which consisted of each driver having to do a set course with the quickest time they could achieve. This was one for the skilled drivers and no mistakes could be made. The spinners took the stage next showing the crowd how it’s done ‘Ekasi’ style. No set course - just freestyle runs with their own stunts. This is always a crowd favourite as the drivers go mad and it gets everyone’s adrenaline rushing!
To have the drifters from Supadrift attend this event really helps this small town grow in KZN’s automotive scene and definitely a positive thing for PMB too as this town needs more motorsport.
Big thumbs up to the organisers, Michael Chetty and Reece Williamson. We hope to see many more events like this!
VW Golf 1 - the worlds most recognized car. Either you own one or know someone who does. The reason I chose this golf to be my very first feature on durbandrags.com is because it looks good, has a banging audio system and has performance upgrades as well.
Akhil Haluman was presented with a stock standard Golf 1 on his 17th birthday. It wasn’t long after that the bug had bitten and the modding began. The exterior has been tweaked with a number of aftermarket goodies the most noticeable being the 17” LENSO BSX rims fitted by the awesome guys at G-Force Tyres. To make the car stand out even more it was brought closer to the ground with a custom 60/40 drop. With the ride height sorted, Akhil decided on having the Vw logo blacked out and also added a set of angel eye headlights coupled with an H.I.D kit, so no more dark nights lay ahead of him. The front end received a color-coded eyelid and the striping on the grill and bumper has been dipped in orange. The bumper sees the addition of the Golf 2 lip as well as smoke indicators.
Onto the interior - orange in all the right place. The seats, door cards & subwoofer enclosure was covered in orange and black leather and orange vinyl was added to the accents on the dash. The car has an array of L.E.D lights all around the interior as well as orange under dash lighting .The driver’s side air vent has been customized by Akhil himself and now houses a digital voltmeter that keeps an eye on the voltage when the bass drops. The audio setup consists of a Jenson in-dash DVD player that sends signal to a Targa 4 channel amp and a Audiogod monoblock. The 4 channel amp powers a pair of Pioneer 6” coaxial speakers while the monstrous monoblock powers the 2x12” Targa Street Series subwoofers which are housed in a custom built fiberglass enclosure that consumes the entire boot. Everything is linked together with 4gauge wiring and the outcome is a really impressive street system.
Finally we come to the engine bay. The engine bay is spotless and that’s hard to come by when a car is daily driven. The engine cover has been chromed and various parts have been sprayed black and orange. That’s not all - the entire engine bay has been given a lick of clear coat and when I say entire engine bay I mean it all , from the rubbers to the hoses to the battery , it all has a coat or two of clear on them. Akhil is a hands on guy so he fabricated a battery cover and wrapped it with orange carbon fiber vinyl while the underside of the bonnet received a splash of orange plastidip. Performance wise the cars 1400 lump has been fiddled with. It now sports a cold air intake with a STK 272 cam, branch and Wildcat exhaust system.
Akhil’s ride has won various trophies over the years in both show and shines and sound off competitions and with regards to future plans we just have to wait and see…
